What is a copyright?
A Copyright is a protection given by the Copyright Act in which the U.S. Law provides protection to the original work of an author. There are seven main categories of works which can be considered Copyright work. They are as follows:
1. litetary work;
2. musical works;
3. dramatic works;
4. pantomimes and choreographic works;
5 .pictorial, graphics and sculptural works;
6. motion pictures and other audiovisual works and
7. sound recordings.
Do I have to copyright my work?
No, you are not required by law to present your work before the U.S. Copyright work in order to have a copyright. Registration is a formality, however it has plenty of advantages.
What are some of the benefits?
The most important aspect of a Copyright registration is due to the fact that it serves as an effective deterrant against third party infringers. It has been proven that it is more effective to deal with infringers once a registration is in hand. Also, other benefits are as follows:
- Grants you the right allow others to reproduce the work in bulk.
- You may allow others to reproduce your work for sale and earn a royalty fee.
COSTS
The total cost per copyright application including all expenses as well as the official fees is $210.00. This covers official fees, attorney’s fees and any correspondence or miscellaneous fees.
